Established by German immigrant August Scholz in 1866 after the American Civil War, Scholz Garten became a hub for German immigrants and their culture in the capital city. The Scholz Garten is evidently an Austin (for that matter maybe Texas) landmark, established in 1866 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Scholz Garten soon became a favorite meeting place for the German population in and around Austin. After Scholz’s death in 1891 his step-son Theodor Reisner owned the little bar and restaurant for two more years, then sold Scholz Garten to the St. Louis-based Lemp Brewing Company, makers of Falstaff Beer.
